Do you know or remember Mike Batt’s stirring song The Ride to Agadir?

“We rode in the morning, / Casablanca to the west”. If you live in the valley of the shadow, any day can be an epic struggle. Paul says: But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! (1Co 15:57) and: If God is for us, who can be against us? (Rom 8:31)

[C126 SV40     27 December 2008]

We rise in the morning
Another night, no rest
But we strap on our armour, go out to do our best
For the Son, in the Spirit
We count all else as lost
And we’re under no illusions; we depend upon the Cross;
We are under no illusions; we depend upon the Cross

In the cold and the loneliness
We sharpen up the Sword
To enable us to stand firm in the power of the Word
With the helmet of Salvation
With His power at our back
We will stand our ground and we will beat off all attacks!
We will stand our ground and we will beat off all attacks!

We will not give in
In this battle we know that we’ll have the victory
There’s no hold for sin
It’s His battle and we know that He’s won our victory

We cry out to Him
Send us power from above!
Let us not forget that You hold us always in your Love
It’s for us You have died
And we must live for You
Give us grace and the power to do what we must do
Give us grace and the power to do what we must do

We will not give in!
In this battle we know that we’ll have the victory
We will trust in Him!
It’s His battle and we know He’s won our victory

We rise in the morning
And face another test
So we strap on our armour, go out and do our best
For the Son, in the Spirit
We count all else as lost
And we’re under no illusions; we depend upon the Cross;
We are under no illusions; our victory’s in the Cross.

1Co 15:57  But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Eph 6:11  Put on all the armor that God gives you, so that you will be able to stand up against the Devil’s evil tricks.
Eph 6:12  For we are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark age.
Eph 6:13  So put on God’s armour now! Then when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist the enemy’s attacks; and after fighting to the end, you will still hold your ground.
Eph 6:14  So stand ready, with truth as a belt tight around your waist, with righteousness as your breastplate,
Eph 6:15  and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace.
Eph 6:16  At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One.
Eph 6:17  And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.
Eph 6:18  Do all this in prayer, asking for God’s help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God’s people.
Php 3:7  But all those things that I might count as profit I now reckon as loss for Christ’s sake.
Rom 8:31  If God is for us, who can be against us?

[I feel that celebrating Christmas without remenbering Good Friday & Easter is like celebrating a wedding anniversary when you’re not even married.]

[Parody: Art Garfunkel’s Bright Eyes]

Looking out into the night-sky
I see a star that is gleaming
Brightly it shines as it leads us along.
Where wíll He be born?
There’s a story told by the prophets
Of the Day of Messiah
Coming to free all His people from sin
As told by Isaiah
Oh — when will He come?

Bright Star! Heavenly fire
Bright Star! You are the prophets’ desire.
When will you lead us to the birthplace of this King of Kings?
Bright Star!

There’s a boat I see on the water;
The fish that are caught there are shining;
Fishermen battle to pull the net in:
What does it mean?
The wind causes the mainsail to billow;
A Man is asleep on a pillow;
He wakes and rebukes the wind and the waves,
Calming then down:
Oh — Who is this Man?

Bright Star! Heavenly fire
Bright Star! You are the prophets’ desire
When will you rule in our hearts, clear away the cloud and the gloom?
Bright Star?

Three trees stand on a hill top:
A strange hush is filling the air;
All around people stand and they stare.
What does it mean?
Listen, the Man up there is speaking;
You see the woman who’s weeping.
The rolls of the dice are parting His clothes;
The Man on the Cross:
Oh — What does He mean?

Bright Star! Heavenly fire
Bright Star! You are the prophets’ desire
How could you lead us to this darkness: the death of this King of Kings
Bright Star?

A faint light fills the eastern horizon:
The third day’s sun that is rising;
Two men shocked as they stand by a tomb:
What does it mean?
The Man dressed in white now is speaking;
Gently calming their fears.
They look and they see the marks on His hands:
They understand —
Yes! They know what it means!

Bright Star! Heavenly fire
Bright Star! You are the prophets’ desire
You have come down, beaten sin, death and the grave
Bright Star!

Bright Star! Heavenly fire
Bright Star! Fill us with your fire
You have come down, beaten sin, death and the grave
Bright Star!
